Coaching
That Prioritizes LGB, Queer & Trans People

Working with those of us who weren’t meant to flourish, to discover ways of doing so nonetheless through our creative, intellectual, professional and other life pursuits.

Adam M. Geary, PhD, MA

Hi, I’m Adam, and at Creative Collaborations, I work with LGB, Queer and Trans people to realize a deeper understanding of how our experiences of marginalization, exclusion and inequality both inform and deform ways of relating to our intellectual and creative activity; to our work, career, and professional lives; to leadership, parenting, and educating; to our families, friends, and communities; to our political and community work; and to ourselves — so as to pursue, genuinely, our authentic aspirations and goals.

Cultivating and supporting creativity in the broadest sense – in the arts, in our lives and careers, in scholarly and intellectual work, in our relationships and communities – is the center of my practice.

For over 25 years, I have been coaching, teaching, and mentoring those of us who have been differently marginalized, excluded and oppressed, into our creativity and toward our aspirations and goals. I draw on my own experience growing up gay in a rural, working-class community, coming of age at the height of AIDS hysteria in the U.S. I know the feeling of being hated, feared and dismissed, including by the people closest to me, including by my self. I know what it means to have an experience of marginalization, exclusion and violence shape me.  My life experience is not, in itself, adequate to caring and critical coaching, but it opened me to a lifetime of intersectional, feminist study, scholarship, teaching, leadership, collaboration and coaching dedicated to supporting and sustaining the goals and aspirations of differently marginalized, excluded and oppressed people. Across my adult life, I have tested feminist, intersectional theory within the real-world practices of teaching, collaborating and coaching, while simultaneously holding these practices accountable to intersectional, liberatory theory.

Coaching Specializations

Creativity Coaching

Creativity coaching is about creating and sustaining a creative practice – the routines, habits, and practices for doing your creative work, no mater the form or media. Successful creators don’t wait for inspiration. They lay a foundation of everyday conditions and habits for inspiration to happen and the work to emerge. Working together, we clarify, build, and sustain those everyday conditions and habits for your creativity.

Life Coaching

LGB, Queer and Trans lives and careers are creative endeavors, or they might be. They are also differently situated in relations of race, class, gender, nationality, and other social and global divides. So the contexts for supporting or impeding life- and career-building are complex. I work with you to become more aware of yourself and the challenges of your context in order to get unstuck, release your creativity, and allow new possibilities and options for living to emerge.

Academic Coaching

Some of us pursue our creativity along academic and scholarly paths. I have a doctorate in the humanities, have published scholarship, and taught in a university setting. I have also coached people into and through each stage of post-high school education, from first-year undergraduates to early-career academics. I work with you to clarify your academic and scholarly interests and to pursue them strategically, reducing the stress of navigating the contemporary higher education environment and maximizing the joy of stretching your mind.
